Characteristics
The Cairngorm Chairlift was a two stage detachable side facing double chairlift built by GMD Mueller. The lower section (Carpark Chairlift) was built in 1967, the top section (White Lady Chairlift) was opened first, carrying it's first passengers on 23rd December 1961. The White Lady Chairlift operated for 40 seasons and operated year round for sightseeing, its last day of operation was 16th April 2001. The Carpark Chairlift last operated for the public on 30th April 2001.

When the Carpark Chairlift was first built it was possible to ride both it and the White Lady Chairlift on the same carrier - though two separate lifts the two stations were joined together to form an angle station through which the carriers passed from one lift to the next on a system of chain driven guide rails.

However heavy drifting frequently buried the upper end of the middle station and in the late 1970s, the bottom terminal of the White Lady Chairlift was raised onto the roof of the middle station, thus it was no longer possible to complete the journey as a single lift.

The choice of side facing chairlift was two fold. Firstly, a large donation given to the project to build the White Lady Chairlift was conditional on the lift being detachable and 'as easy to use for walkers as it is for skiers'. Secondly, the side facing chairs reduced the effect of head-winds on the carriers and more importantly had greater tower clearance - important as the prevailing wind direction was across the line of the White Lady Chairlift.
